Some of the worst industries for bogus, unlawful and excess charges and practices are the telephone and internet industries. With billions of customers, a “small” overcharge or illegal fee of $5 adds up to millions of dollars of illegal profits. But there are laws against this, and many of them require the company to not only refund your money, but also pay you a penalty and cover all attorney fees.
You know how much you are paying for internet, and what speed tier you are supposed to be getting under your plan. Most providers offer a free speed test on-line. Other scams in these areas include companies that masquerade as the phone company or other utility, but are in fact not related. They send notices that LOOK like a legitimate billing, but are a scam. Others send notices for a legitimate service, but give the impression that you must agree to buy the service in order to continue your phone or internet. These are all illegal.
