Lawyers have heard the jokes.

They've probably even laughed at a couple.

But after Painesville-based firm Dworken & Bernstein surprised the officials at numerous nonprofit organizations - and even a government agency - no one's laughing anymore.

Receiving $14 million in gifts will do that.

Dworken & Bernstein, citing an obscure legal doctrine, doled out the funds to 34 charities statewide as the largest "cy pres" award ever made. Groups in Lake and Geauga counties received $4 million from the "Ohio Lawyers Giving Back" program.
